Let’s Celebrate Writing

Let’s celebrate writing. We celebrate National Day on Writing on October 20th. This is an initiative of the National Council of Teachers of English. The day is meant to celebrate the importance of writing and to encourage people to write for fun and self-expression.

Take a minute to stop and think about all of the things you wrote today. Did you write an email? tweet? story? a shopping list? a report? We all have our own reasons for why we write, and many are essential to accomplishing our daily plans.

Reading gets all of the attention, but writing is equally as important. Here are some benefits of writing:

Communication Skills – Effective communication is a key skill for anyone who is seeking a job. Being able to communicate effectively is a skill that will help you to stand out on a job interview.

Confidence – Writing can improve communication skills which will improve self confidence. Writing is all about practice. The more you practice the better and more confident you become.

Creativity – Writing can aid in the development of creativity. When you write you are generating new thoughts, ideas or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems.

Decision Making – By writing down your thoughts and listing the pros and cons of a decision, can help you clarify your thinking and make better decisions.

Memory – The more you read and write, the better your memory will become over time. Writing helps you to organize and retain information.

Reduces Stress – Writing helps you express your feelings, thus releasing stress and making you feel better. Writing about your problems helps to get them out of your head.

Knowledge – The more you write, the more you will learn. Writing information down helps reinforce the knowledge in your brain.

Ways to celebrate

Here are a few ways that I have celebrated writing with students

1. Have a Write-In!

2. Create a graffiti board

3. Cover the sidewalk in powerful words using chalk

4. Create a class recipe book or have students share recipes online

5. Interview family members and share stories

Thoughts …

There you have it. There are many more benefits to writing than I have listed and there are many more ways to celebrate writing. I would love to have your thoughts on writing and ways to celebrate. Just leave them in the comments below.

With gratitude …

I am so glad you’re here. Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I am grateful that I can share my writing journey with you. It is an endless journey of learning and growing. A journey that I am enjoying.

I am now booking author visits for the 2025 school year. If you are a classroom teacher, teacher assistant, Parent Teacher Association President, or After school Director I can work with you to create a visit that will meet the needs of your students. Please contact me to book your visit.

My website has been updates and it is now interactive. There are surprises everywhere. Click on the balloons and see where they take you. Can you find two writing videos? Freebies? A chocolate chip recipe? There’s even a special freebie to anyone who subscribes to my newsletter. Check out the resources for childrenparents and teachers, librarians and homeschooling families.

Please consider purchasing a copy of Two Wins for Wiley or Gertie Saves the Day for gifts. The holidays are quickly approaching and books make great gifts. Books can be read over and over again. It is my wish to get as many books as I can into the hands of children. Children need to hear all kinds of stories. A book is the best gift for both children and adults!

A request …

You can really help this author by leaving a book review on Amazon or Goodreads. You can leave a review for Gertie Saves the Day here or here. Two Wins for Wiley here or here.  Reviews can be as easy as 2-3 sentences. It should take about 30 seconds to leave and would make a huge difference for this author.
