As a picture book author, I’ve learned that one of the most powerful tools in our creative toolbox isn’t fancy new software, AI or a viral social media post—it’s the ability to embrace change. Change is good!
Whether you’re just starting your journey writing for kids, or you’ve been crafting stories for years, change is inevitable. And that’s a good thing.
Here’s why embracing change can help you thrive as a children’s book writer—and even enjoy the process along the way.
Change Fuels Creative Growth
One of the best-kept secrets about being a children’s book author is that the more you grow personally, the stronger your stories become. When you explore new genres, try different illustration styles, or switch from rhyming to prose, you open the door to creative breakthroughs.
Adapting to change in children’s publishing—whether it’s new submission guidelines, marketing trends, or reader preferences—keeps your writing fresh and relevant.
The Children’s Publishing Industry Is Always Evolving
Let’s face it: the children’s publishing industry never stands still. What sold last year might not sell this year. Publishing houses shift their focus. New platforms for indie authors pop up every month. Instead of resisting, lean in.
Explore other options. Take a webinar on audiobook production. Consider hybrid publishing. Each of these changes can open new doors and expand your reach as a children’s book writer.
Change Helps You Connect with New Audiences
Maybe you started out writing bedtime stories, but now you’re passionate about books that help kids navigate big emotions or learn about diversity. Changing your niche as a picture book author isn’t a step backward—it’s growth.
When you shift your message or audience, you might discover readers (and publishers) who are excited to share your work.
Industry Shifts Bring New Opportunities
From AI tools that assist in drafting outlines to print-on-demand platforms that support indie publishing, there’s never been a better time to experiment.
Authors who stay informed and adapt to changes in the children’s book market often gain a competitive advantage. Embrace technology. Join critique groups. Attend virtual writing conferences. Be curious!
Final Thoughts: Change Is a Creative Superpower
If you’re wondering how to thrive as a picture book author in an ever-changing world, the answer is simple: don’t fear change—embrace it.
Whether you’re trying a new writing process, experimenting with different publishing routes, or rebranding yourself as a children’s book writer, every shift is a chance to grow.
Change isn’t the enemy—it’s the secret ingredient that keeps your stories meaningful and your author journey fulfilling.

Why Change?
I am going to change things up right now! I love writing this blog and hearing from my readers. This blog is currently being published weekly. Beginning on July 1st this blog will be published twice a month. It will be published on the first and 15th of each month moving forward. Writing these weekly blog posts has helped me strengthen my writing skills. Spending more time writing picture books for children is one of my goals. This summer I will be reading more children’s books and exploring different genres. I know change is good and now is the time for me to make a change. I cannot wait to see what adventures await me!
With gratitude …
I am so glad you’re here. Thank you for taking the time to read this post. I am grateful that I can share my writing journey with you. It is an endless journey of learning and growing. A journey that I am enjoying.
I am now booking author visits for the fall, 2025 school year. If you are a classroom teacher, teacher assistant, Parent Teacher Association President, After School Director, or Girl Scout Leader. I can work with you to create a visit that will meet the needs of your students. Please contact me to book your visit.
My website is constantly being updated and it is interactive. There are surprises everywhere. Be sure to check out the resources for children, parents and teachers, librarians and homeschooling families.
Please consider purchasing a copy of Two Wins for Wiley or Gertie Saves the Day for gifts. Books make great gifts. Books can be read over and over again. It is my wish to get as many books as I can into the hands of children. Children need to hear all kinds of stories. A book is the best gift for both children and adults!
