Summer has a special kind of magic.
The schedules slow down. Bedtimes become a little more flexible. Days are filled with sunshine, adventures, and opportunities to make memories that last long after summer ends.
While family vacations and trips to the beach are wonderful traditions, there’s another summer ritual that may have an even greater impact on your child’s future:
Reading together.
Whether it’s one picture book before bedtime, a chapter after lunch, or a story under the shade of a favorite tree, reading together is one of the simplest—and most meaningful—ways to help children grow.
Best of all, it doesn’t require expensive supplies or elaborate planning. Just a book, a little time, and someone to share the story with.
Why Summer Reading Matters
Many parents worry about the “summer slide,” when children lose some of the reading skills they worked so hard to build during the school year.
The good news? It doesn’t take hours of worksheets or structured lessons to keep those skills sharp.
Reading together for just 15–20 minutes a day helps children:
- Build vocabulary
- Strengthen comprehension
- Improve listening skills
- Increase attention span
- Maintain reading confidence
- Develop a lifelong love of books
Most importantly, reading becomes something children associate with comfort, connection, and joy—not homework.
Reading Together Builds More Than Reading Skills
Books do so much more than teach words.
Every story opens the door to conversations about feelings, friendships, courage, kindness, and perseverance.
As children listen to characters solve problems, overcome fears, or help others, they begin to understand their own emotions a little better.
Reading together helps children develop:

- Confidence
Stories become safe places where children can explore big feelings and discover that they’re not alone.
The Best Conversations Happen After “The End”
Some of the most meaningful moments happen after you close the book.
Try asking simple questions like:
- What was your favorite part?
- Which character reminded you of you?
- What would you have done differently?
- Did anyone in the story show kindness?
- What made the character brave?
There are no wrong answers.
These conversations encourage children to think, express themselves, and connect stories to their own lives.
Create a Summer Reading Tradition
Reading together doesn’t have to happen in the same place every day.
Make it feel like an adventure by creating special reading experiences:
Read in a blanket fort.
Take books to the park.
Pack a story for the beach.
Have a family reading picnic.
Read by flashlight before bedtime.
You can even create a family “Bookcation” by choosing books that take you to exciting places or introduce unforgettable characters.
Children are much more likely to become lifelong readers when books are connected with happy memories.
Let Your Child Choose
One of the best ways to encourage reading is surprisingly simple:
Let your child choose the book.
Whether it’s funny stories, sports, animals, mysteries, or colorful picture books, children are more excited to read when they have ownership over the experience.
Summer is the perfect time to follow their interests and discover new favorites together.
Stories That Grow With Your Child
The books children remember most often aren’t the ones with the biggest vocabulary words.
They’re the ones that made them laugh, think, or feel brave.
Stories that celebrate courage, perseverance, teamwork, and kindness stay with children long after the last page is turned.
